About Washington Elementary

George Washington Elementary School was built in 1989 and students first attended classes during the 1990-1991 school year. Dr. Christie Seely was Washington's first principal. There were 17 teachers and 327 students that first year. Dr. Seely served as Washington's principal until 1995. In 1995, a new, four classroom addition was opened, bringing the number of classrooms to 18. The school also has a library, cafeteria/multipurpose room, gymnasium, music room and three portable classrooms. The school site has a very large playground area which includes two blacktop play areas, two playground equipment areas, a softball field, soccer field, and a beautiful outdoor classroom area. Currently, Washington has 570 students and a total staff of 42 teachers and support personnel.

Dr. Ruth Ann Carr became Washington's second principal for the 1995/96 school year, and served in that capacity until October of 1996. At that time she became the Personnel Director for Norman Public Schools and eventually Assistant Superintendent. In October of 1996, Richard Dennis became Washington's principal, and was followed by Kathy Nauman in 2001. Dr. Linda Parsons became Washington's principal in August of 2003.

Located on the east side of Norman in a beautiful rural setting, Washington draws students from a large boundary area. The school has a very active PTA that supports the students and staff with gifts of their time, talents, and money. The staff prides itself on a philosophy of being child centered with high expectations for themselves and the students. Student learning focuses on the Oklahoma P.A.S.S. document and Norman's Articulated Curriculum, and is enriched with field trips, guest artists and speakers, student performances, service learning projects, and other enrichment activities.

School Song

Washington School, where
eagles take flight
faster than the speed of light.
We are the best we're
better than the rest.
'cause we're the Washington Eagles.
Put us to the test!
